Disney's Box Office Dominance Continues As 'Moana 2' Crosses $1 Billion Mark

The Walt Disney Company's prowess in the box office domain remains unchallenged, with its latest release, "Moana 2," achieving a significant milestone during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. According to a report, the animated sequel has topped the $1 billion mark, joining the ranks of Disney's other blockbusters for the year, including Marvel's "Deadpool and Wolverine" and Pixar's "Inside Out 2." No competing Hollywood studio managed to cross this benchmark last year.

"Moana 2" amassed an impressive $442.8 million domestically, while adding $567.1 million from international markets, bringing its total to over $1 billion. This feat positions it as the fourth Disney animation to join the billion-dollar club, following the footsteps of "Frozen," "Frozen II," and "Zootopia."

Disney faced challenges post-pandemic with its animated offerings, primarily due to its strategy of releasing some titles directly on Disney+, which conditioned audiences to expect new releases at home. However, with the phenomenal success of "Inside Out 2" earlier in June and its massive $650 million domestic run, the studio rejuvenated the box office, becoming the first billion-dollar film since Warner Bros' "Barbie" in 2024.

This marked a significant achievement, as "Inside Out 2" became the highest-grossing film of the year, also setting a record for generating more than $480 million globally, a feat not achieved by any Pixar or Walt Disney Animation film since 2019.

Complemented by the successes of "Deadpool and Wolverine," "Inside Out 2," and "Moana 2," Disney's impressive box office haul reached over $2.2 billion domestically last year, capturing approximately 25% of the industry's total, based on Comscore data. With "Moana 2" crossing the billion threshold, Disney now boasts 32 films in the billion-dollar bracket, including three from the 2019 Fox acquisition. To put this in perspective, out of the 56 films that have historically surpassed the $1 billion mark globally, Disney accounts for nearly 60%, underscoring their monumental influence in the cinematic landscape.
