Egg Prices Continue to Soar Amidst Persistent Supply Challenges

In another eggciting turn, the beloved staple of the American breakfast table has once again seen a notable price hike. According to a recent report by Yahoo Finance, egg prices surged by a staggering 37.5% year-over-year, along with an 8.2% increase from the previous month in November. This marks a continuation of the volatility in egg prices, which have been influenced by factors such as the avian flu and seasonal demand during the holidays.

The cost of a dozen large Grade A eggs averaged $3.65 in November, up from $3.37 in October, yet below the $3.82 seen in September. Despite these fluctuations, prices remain significantly higher than the $2.52 observed at the beginning of 2024.

Underlying this sharp rise in prices, the avian flu has been a considerable disruptor, resulting in a 4% decline in US egg production year-over-year as of October 2024, totaling 9.19 billion eggs. The virus also led to the loss of 2.8 million egg-laying birds across Utah, Washington, and Oregon. Such challenges have maintained egg prices above typical levels observed in prior years.

On the trade front, the United States exported chicken eggs valued at $565.2 million in 2023, with Mexico ($194.7 million) and Canada ($174.8 million) being the top export destinations, according to data from IndexBox. Meanwhile, imports stood at $48.3 million, with the United Kingdom and Netherlands leading the import market.

Despite these adversities, egg producers like Pete and Gerry's Eggs have managed to navigate the epidemic thanks to their fragmented farm models, avoiding the typical migratory paths of afflicted birds. As highlighted by CEO Tom Flacco, "We have a we have a fragmented model. We're in close to 300 farms and barns across the country and so our eggs are not beholden to any one flight path of migratory birds."

Looking ahead to 2025, analysts forecast a price drop, with egg costs potentially falling 85 cents below the 2024 average. This projection hinges on an expected increase in egg production by 4.2% as producers work to rebuild their flocks, aiming for a return to more favorable pricing conditions.
