Egypt Re-enters the Dollar-Bond Market with $2 Billion Issuance

In a significant move towards stabilizing its economy, Egypt successfully issued $2 billion in dollar-bonds, marking its first such deal in nearly two years. According to Bloomberg, this issuance is a testament to Egypt's recovery from one of the most severe economic downturns in its history.

The bond issuance was divided into two categories: $1.25 billion in five-year notes with a yield of 8.625%, and $750 million in eight-year debt yielding 9.45%. Despite a recent slowdown in emerging-market bond sales, Egypt's successful issuance received an overwhelming response, with investors placing orders nearing $10 billion.

As reported by Bloomberg, Egypt last ventured into the dollar-bond market in 2023 with its inaugural Islamic Sukuk issuance, raising $1.5 billion. The country had not issued conventional bonds since September 2021. The government's decision to issue bonds at this juncture signals a positive outlook for increased bond issuance activities within emerging markets.

To manage this transaction, Egypt enlisted the expertise of renowned financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citigroup Inc., HSBC Holdings Plc, Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Standard Chartered Plc, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp.

This financial maneuver unfolds amid a backdrop of intense economic reforms.
