Equistone Pauses Fundraising for Flagship Fund Amid Strategic Reevaluation

Equistone, a mid-market private equity firm, has suspended its fundraising efforts for its flagship Fund VII. This decision follows the firm's inability to meet its initial target of around EUR2.5 billion ($2.6 billion), according to a report from Bloomberg.

The firm is currently exploring alternative fundraising formats, which could involve more sector-specific or geographical-focused strategies. These new strategies might include the launch of sub-funds or utilization of capital from the flagship fund.

A reduction in new investments within German-speaking countries has also been announced, attributable to Equistone's capital constraints. The firm's headcount has declined to approximately 50 employees, marking a decrease from a peak of over 70, as it recently consolidated its back-office teams and saw the exit of some investment professionals in the DACH region.

Reflecting broader industry trends, Equistone's fundraising attempt comes at a challenging time for midsized buyout firms, with many investors preferring larger asset managers or niche-focused specialists. According to data from IndexBox, the European private equity market is experiencing a shift, with investors opting for reduced exposure to underperforming firms.

Despite these challenges, Equistone continues to invest the capital already raised for Fund VII, evident in its recent bolt-on acquisitions for existing portfolio companies. For instance, QuestGates, a claims services company backed by Equistone, has acquired Brownsword, a motor industry claims firm, and Toppings, a forensic accounting provider.
