Essar Group Enhances US Iron Ore Project with $650 Million Investment

The Indian Essar Group is set to invest an additional $650 million in its iron ore venture in Minnesota, USA, reaffirming the company's strategic focus on the American market. For more details, visit the full announcement here.

Essar's renewed commitment comes on top of the already significant $1.7 billion investment, aiming to establish a state-of-the-art 7 million tonne per annum mining and pelletizing facility, leveraging 1.3 billion tonnes of high-grade reserves. This ambitious project aligns with the ongoing shift in the US steel industry towards sustainable, low-carbon production.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, the export value for iron ore from the United States remained steady at $1.1 billion in both 2023 and 2024. The major recipients of US iron ore exports in 2024 were Canada ($750.9 million), China ($135 million), and the Netherlands ($36.9 million). Conversely, the US imported iron ore valued at $751.5 million in 2024, with Brazil leading as the top exporter to the US at $400.9 million, followed by Canada and Sweden.

In addition to its US project, Essar Group is making strides globally with green initiatives. Notably, the company announced a $4 billion investment in Saudi Arabia for clean steel production and a $3.6 billion initiative to establish a green hydrogen plant in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India, further underscoring its commitment to industrial decarbonization and innovation in clean steel production.
