EU Scrutinizes Apple's New Fee Structure for App Developers

Apple's new fee policy for app developers has once again attracted the attention of the European Union's antitrust regulators, as reported by Bloomberg via Yahoo Finance. The concern centers around the potential inflation of costs for software developers due to Apple's newly implemented "core technology fee".

The EU regulators have recently circulated another round of inquiries focusing on Apple's recent levy adjustments. The introduction of a 0.50 euros ($0.5102) charge per installed app aims to align with the bloc's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which intends to regulate large tech platforms more strictly and can levy fines up to 10% of a company's global annual revenue.

The European Union's current examination looks into whether Apple's revised charges might eventually burden consumers or necessitate business model revisions for developers. Additionally, the EU is assessing Apple's claim that this restructuring will ultimately reduce costs for developers.

This move comes amidst calls from American tech leaders for President-elect Donald Trump to resist European regulatory measures against U.S. tech firms. Meanwhile, data from the IndexBox platform indicates that the tech sector's economic dynamics are increasingly hinging on regulatory frameworks, highlighting the complex interplay between regulation and innovation.

Apple's situation remains precarious, as the company didn't respond to requests for comment, and its shares saw a dip of 1.8% during early trading sessions. Currently, Apple maintains that 85% of developers within its App Store ecosystem do not incur any commission charges.
