Eurasian Resources Group Overhauls Operations Amid Cobalt Market Struggles

Kazakhstan-backed Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) is set to undertake a strategic review of its mining permits in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and consider offloading assets in Mozambique, as part of an operational overhaul, according to a report by Mining.com. The shake-up comes in response to a significant oversupply of cobalt globally, which has driven prices of the metal, essential for battery production, to record lows.

Philippe Treand, CEO of ERG's Africa unit, emphasized the need to streamline operations in the DRC, citing unsustainable costs associated with maintaining numerous licenses. The country's cobalt exports reached a value of $4.1 billion in 2024, positioning the DRC as the world's leading exporter, according to data from the IndexBox platform. However, the depressed market is expected to continue for the next two to three years, posing challenges for miners.

Treand also mentioned that despite the ongoing conflict in Eastern Congo, ERG's operations remain unaffected, given their geographical distance from the conflict zones. Additionally, the company is reassessing its projects in South Africa and Zimbabwe as part of its broader strategy.

China, the largest importer of cobalt, recorded imports totaling $3.1 billion in 2024, underscoring its significant role in the global cobalt market. This demand dynamic highlights the critical economic relationships within the cobalt supply chain, as companies like ERG navigate the current market volatility.
