Euro Zone Business Starts 2025 on a Positive Note

Euro zone businesses have kicked off the year 2025 with a modest return to growth, buoyed by stable services activity and a gradual recovery in the manufacturing sector, according to a recent survey. The detailed report highlights that the HCOBs preliminary composite euro zone Purchasing Managers Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, rose to 50.2 in January, up from December's 49.6, indicating a shift from contraction to slight expansion.

This exceeds the expectations set by a Reuters poll, which had forecast a more conservative increase to 49.7. The euro zone's dominant services sector showed resilience despite a slight dip, with its PMI reading at 51.4, still above the breakeven point, though slightly under the Reuters prediction of 51.5. Nevertheless, demand growth remained sluggish, as evidenced by the new business index's marginal rise to 50.7 from 50.2.

Manufacturing, which faced a downturn starting mid-2022, depicted signs of recovery. The sector's headline PMI increased to 46.1 from 45.1, surpassing a Reuters projection of 45.3. However, an index measuring output, integral to the composite PMI, registered below 50 but climbed to 46.8 from 44.3, marking the highest level in eight months.

While manufacturers contended with escalating raw material costs, they opted to maintain consistent pricing for their products, as shown by the input prices index climbing to a five-month high of 51.6 from 50.0. Employment figures reflected cautious optimism, with firms making slight reductions in workforce. The composite employment index saw a subtle increase to 49.8 from 49.2, inching close to stability.
