Euronext NV Explores Consolidation of Exchange-Traded Products

Euronext NV is considering a major restructuring of its exchange-traded products (ETP) listings by potentially relocating all to a single trading venue. Bloomberg reports that the consolidation aims to streamline operations across its seven bourses, notably Amsterdam, Paris, Oslo, Brussels, Dublin, Lisbon, and Milan.

The discussion, still ongoing, could lead to changes as early as the third quarter of 2025, according to people familiar with the matter. One potential outcome might be that product issuers could select a single exchange for their listings. This initiative is part of Euronext's strategic plan to develop a comprehensive and efficient ETF market that could reverse the current trend of liquidity fragmentation.

The European ETF market, while expanding rapidly to manage approximately $2.4 trillion in assets, lags behind the colossal $11 trillion U.S. market primarily due to Europe's fragmented capital systems that disperse liquidity and increase complexity and costs. The IndexBox platform highlights similar challenges, emphasizing the effective consolidation of listings as a potential game changer for enhancing market efficiency.

This move aligns with broader European Union efforts to integrate its markets, as noted by leaders like European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, who have critiqued the sluggish progress toward market unification. A consolidated trading strategy may fall in step with EU plans to establish a "consolidated tape" for assets, bringing a unified data feed from diverse trading platforms.

As Euronext explores these options, considerations are being made regarding the accessibility for market participants not currently connected to the potential centralized venue in Amsterdam. Further deliberation is necessary regarding clearing and settlement processes, with euro-denominated products possibly being settled via Euronext Securities and others through Euroclear Bank.
