European Investment Bank Elevates Green Transition Financing to €50.7 Billion for 2024

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has reached a new milestone in its commitment to climate action and environmental sustainability by increasing its financing by 14% year-on-year to a record €50.7 billion in 2024. This announcement was confirmed in a recent report from the institution dated January 31, 2025.

The EIB, which allocated €31 billion of this funding specifically for energy efficiency, renewable energy, storage, and electricity networks, aims to mobilize over €100 billion in investments. This initiative represents 57% of the bank's total financing for the previous year.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, the EIB is on track to not only meet but exceed its ambitious target of dedicating over 50% of its annual financing to combat climate change by 2025. In fact, the EIB surpassed this goal in the past three years, recording 51%, 58%, and 60% allocations for 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively.

Additionally, the EIB Group signed new financing agreements worth €89 billion last year, focusing approximately 90% of these investments within the EU. The bank's goal for this year includes increasing signed financing volumes to €95 billion and maintaining the environmental financing target level at 60%.

Highlighting the impact of its financing efforts, the EIB recently provided €100 million to Marcegaglia Steel Group for its decarbonization strategy, aimed at reducing carbon emissions through energy efficiency and innovation initiatives across its Italian operations, with completion expected in 2028.

The EIB has also set itself an ambitious goal of supporting €1 trillion in investments related to climate and sustainable development by 2030, positioning itself as a driving force for the green transition within Europe and beyond.
