European Natural Gas Prices Surge After Russian Supply Halt

European natural gas futures reached their highest level since October 2023 after Russian gas flows to Europe via Ukraine ceased on New Year's Day. The price of the Dutch TTF, the benchmark for European natural gas, climbed by more than 4% to EUR51 per megawatt-hour, before easing slightly Euronews reported.

The halt, caused by the expiration of a longstanding transit deal, has led to concerns over faster storage withdrawals as cold weather exacerbates demand. Currently, European gas inventories are at around 75%, having been depleted at the fastest rate since 2021 due to recent cold snaps, according to data from IndexBox and Gas Infrastructure Europe.

Despite the turmoil, Europe faces no immediate energy crisis. However, the EU anticipates greater market volatility as it seeks to replace the lost Russian imports, which accounted for 5% of its natural gas supply. The year-on-year gas price surge of 50% poses a potential threat to European competitiveness and could increase household energy costs.

Central European nations like Hungary and Slovakia, heavily reliant on Ukrainian transit routes, are most affected and face logistical challenges; the TurkStream pipeline is insufficient to fully offset the transit gap. The European Commission has proposed accessing Greek, Turkish, and Romanian gas supplies via the Trans-Balkan route as a remedial measure.

Looking ahead, Europe could encounter higher costs in restocking gas reserves for the next winter, with current prices for upcoming summer deliveries surpassing those for winter 2025-26. This concern was echoed by Arne Lohmann Rasmussen of Global Risk Management, who warned of potentially expensive replenishment efforts if storage levels remain low.
