Eurozone Business Activity Sees Modest Growth Amid Persistent Challenges

Business activity in the eurozone has expanded for the first time since August 2024, marking a modest improvement, according to data released by the Hamburg Commercial Bank (HCOB). The latest figures from the IndexBox platform support this trend, highlighting a stabilizing economic environment that nonetheless faces significant barriers to robust growth.

The preliminary Composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), a key indicator of economic health, rose from 49.60 in December to 50.20 in January, signaling mild growth. Despite the increase, the overall economic climate remains cautious, with the services sector showing slower expansion at 51.4, down from 51.6 in December.

In the eurozone's largest economy, Germany, the Composite PMI recorded a seven-month high of 50.1, suggesting a move back into expansion territory. France experienced an uptick in both its Composite and Manufacturing PMIs, but both remain in contraction territory. This reflects ongoing economic challenges, such as political unrest and an unresolved deficit issue.

IndexBox data reveals that input costs rose sharply, marking the fastest climb since April 2023, with manufacturing and services sectors both experiencing increased costs. German output prices notably surged, contributing to these inflationary pressures, while French selling prices decreased for the first time in nearly four years.

Commenting on these developments, Peter Vanden Houte, ING Belgium's chief economist, stated that the European Central Bank (ECB) faces a complex situation of balancing weak growth against sticky inflation. He suggested a continued gradual easing process by the ECB, with incremental rate cuts, given that inflationary pressures are expected to be temporary.
