Eurozone Economy Faces Manufacturing-Led Contraction in December 2024

The Eurozone economy experienced a slight contraction in December 2024, primarily driven by a decrease in manufacturing activity, according to the HCOB Eurozone Composite PMI Output Index. The composite PMI stood at 49.6 in December, a slight improvement from November's figure of 48.3, yet still indicative of an economic contraction with France being the weakest of the three largest eurozone economies.

Significant falls in new business and employment contributed to the downturn, as indicated by a composite PMI reading below the critical 50 mark, which signifies contraction. Both the manufacturing and services sectors across major eurozone economies like Germany, France, and Italy reported a decrease in business activity. In France, the PMI for manufacturing plummeted to 41.9 from 43.1 in November, marking the sharpest contraction since May 2020.

Germany's composite PMI was slightly adjusted to 48 in December from a preliminary 47.8, reflecting a slowing contraction despite a resurgence in the services sector. Italy narrowly avoided full contraction with a PMI of 49.7, supported by an upturn in the services sector to 50.7.

In contrast, Spain experienced considerable growth, with its private sector output expanding robustly. The services sector PMI soared to 57.3 in December, while manufacturing also recorded slight growth. Ireland joined Spain in showing expansion, demonstrating the heterogeneous nature of economic performance across the eurozone.

The slump in new orders persisted within the bloc, yet confidence levels displayed a tentative improvement. Despite a reduction in workforce numbers, especially in France where employment fell for the first time in four years, the drop was less marked than prior months. This trend, coupled with rising costs and price pressures highlighted by the services sector's resurgence, suggests that the European Central Bank (ECB) faces ongoing challenges in managing inflation and economic stagnation.
