EVgo's Shares Plummet Amid Secondary Offering

Shares of electric vehicle (EV) charging station operator EVgo (EVGO) experienced a significant downturn following the announcement of a secondary public offering by its largest investor, LS Power Equity Partners. In a regulatory filing, EVgo emphasized that no company-held shares would be sold, implying that the proceeds will benefit LS Power exclusively. Notably, the majority ownership by LS Power allows it to strongly influence corporate decisions, from director elections to major transactions.

EVgo commands a noteworthy portion of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure market, underscored by its recent $1.25 billion Department of Energy loan guarantee to fund the installation of 7,000 EV chargers across the United States over the next five years. Despite this promising expansion plan, the company's warning about potential adverse effects on its business if loan conditions are unmet caused its stock to drop sharply.

However, despite the immediate 25% dip in stock prices post-announcement, EVgo shares have seen a 30% increase in 2024, reflecting investor optimism in the long-term growth potential of EV infrastructure.
