Exxon Mobil Eyes Hess Corp's Guyana Oil Assets Sale

Exxon Mobil is aiming to "participate" in the sale of Hess Corp's oil production assets in Guyana, and plans to leverage the value generated from its work on developing the country's offshore fields, as reported by two top executives on Wednesday. Source.

The arbitration outcome, which is to be decided by a three-member panel in May, will influence whether the proposed sale of Hess to Chevron, which is part of a $53 billion megamerger wave, proceeds under the original terms. This comes as Exxon and Chinese partner CNOOC Ltd dispute the sale, asserting their right of first refusal embedded in the joint venture agreement regarding any sale of Guyana's stakes.

Exxon CEO Darren Woods, in one of his most detailed discussions about the arbitration, emphasized, "We developed the value of that asset. We have the right to consider the value of that asset in this transaction, and then the right to take an option on it. There is an option here. We think it is in the best interest of shareholders to maintain that value option."

Hess's Guyana holdings have shown substantial promise with discoveries exceeding 11 billion barrels of oil, underpinning 60% to 80% of Chevron's proposed acquisition cost of Hess. Despite the significant potential, Hess insists that its properties in Guyana will not be sold separately if the Chevron deal falls through.
