Fed Pauses Rate Cuts Amid Improving Economic Indicators

The U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to maintain its benchmark interest rate in the range of 4.25% to 4.50% during its meeting on January 28-29, 2025. According to a report by Howard Schneider, economic data since December has fostered a more optimistic outlook among Fed officials regarding inflation and job market conditions.

Inflation Trends and Economic Forecast

Inflation rates seem poised to improve, as the core Consumer Price Index (CPI), which excludes food and energy, has shown a slight decline. The data suggests that inflation rose at roughly a 2% annual rate through December, hovering near the Fed's target over the past three to six months. Fed officials anticipate these trends will continue to favor their inflation targets, especially with the influence of "base effects" coming into play.

Job Market Stability

Despite initial concerns in December, the job market has displayed resilience with the economy gaining approximately 250,000 jobs last month. This has contributed to a decrease in the unemployment rate to 4.1%. Fed Chair Jerome Powell remarked on the diminished downside risks to the labor market, noting its "solid" state and contributing to the decision to pause further rate cuts.
