Fed's Kugler Signals Steady Monetary Policy Amid Economic Growth

In a recent address, Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler indicated that there is no rush to cut interest rates while highlighting expected continued economic growth. (Source), she cited the solid labor market with the unemployment rate dropping to 4% as employers added 143,000 jobs last month. This data portrays a stable economy without signs of overheating or weakening.

Despite inflation retreating from its peak in mid-2022, Kugler emphasized that the progress has been inconsistent, with inflation remaining high and new policy impacts uncertain. She did not specify the timeline for maintaining the current fed funds rate, which is held between 4.25% and 4.50% as per last week's decision.

Kugler noted that "Going forward, in considering the appropriate federal funds rate, we will watch these developments closely and continue to carefully assess incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks." Her remarks align closely with Fed Chair Jerome Powell's statement that the committee is waiting for more signs of inflation mitigation or a labor market downturn before adjusting rates.

Moreover, she highlighted recent productivity growth, suggesting that if sustained, it could assist the Fed in achieving 2% inflation and full employment. Kugler, speaking in Miami, also underscored the significant contributions of Latinos and Latino immigrants to the U.S. economy during her presentations.
