Ford Faces Mounting Losses in EV Division Amid Industry Challenges

In a significant development for the automobile industry, Ford Motor Co. anticipates continued losses in its electric vehicle (EV) division despite exceeding earnings expectations for the fourth quarter. (source) Ford's EV segment, known as Model e, projected a $5.1 billion loss in 2024, with similar losses expected for 2025.

EV Division Challenges and Strategic Investments

According to Ford's full-year outlook, the company expects adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of $7 billion to $8.5 billion, with capital investments ranging from $8 billion to $9 billion. The ongoing $5 billion to $5.5 billion EBIT loss in Model e is a stark contrast to the profits from other segments, such as Ford Pro and Ford Blue, which are anticipated to generate substantial positive returns.

Sherry House, Ford's incoming CFO, emphasized that while the EV division will incur significant costs, particularly related to battery facilities and engineering for the next generation of EV products, positive trends are emerging. Notably, the Ford Mustang Mach-E exhibited a remarkable sales increase of over 30% quarter over quarter, outperforming the traditional Mustang.

Industry-Wide EV Dynamics

Despite Ford's challenges, the broader EV market presents mixed results, with many automakers readjusting strategies in 2024. General Motors (GM) reported that its EVs became "variable profit positive" last year, although they fell short of production goals, delivering 189,000 units in North America.

Similarly, Toyota postponed its U.S. EV production plans until 2026, deviating from its previous schedule, while Volvo revised its 2030 all-electric goal to include hybrid vehicles.
