Former IEA Director Criticizes Agency's Energy Outlook in New Report

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is facing calls to revamp its annual energy outlook to better reflect realistic scenarios, according to a report released on Wednesday by Neil Atkinson, the agency's former oil director. The report, titled 'Energy Delusions,' was published by the National Center for Energy Analytics and seeks to influence energy policy under President Donald Trump's administration.

Atkinson's report challenges 23 assumptions made by the IEA that suggest the global oil economy will peak by 2030, implying no new investments in oil and gas are necessary. The report argues that the agency underestimates potential growth in emerging oil markets and the plastic and petrochemicals sectors, while overestimating the rapid adoption of electric vehicles.

An analysis of industry trends from the IndexBox platform indicates continued growth in sectors like plastics, driven by expanding demand in emerging markets. These findings align with Atkinson's critique of the IEA's projections and highlight the ongoing relevance of traditional oil and gas investments.

"The promotional aspirations and flawed assumptions underlying the IEA's peak-demand scenarios have serious implications, given the obvious global economic and security considerations in planning for and delivering reliable, affordable energy supplies," the report states.

The report's criticism reflects broader tensions between the IEA's focus on a clean energy transition and the Trump administration's agenda, which prioritizes boosting traditional oil and gas industries. This focus has also provoked discontent among other major oil-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia.
