Fortescue Partners with China Baowu Steel for Green Steel Production

Fortescue, the world's fourth-largest iron ore supplier, has announced a strategic partnership with a subsidiary of China Baowu Steel Group, the leader in the global steelmaking industry, to tackle the pressing challenges of decarbonizing steel production. As reported by Mining.com, this collaboration is underpinned by a memorandum of understanding signed with Baowu Resources, aiming to build a sustainable iron supply chain.

The announcement was made on Fortescue's WeChat account, with COO Shelley Robertson emphasizing the importance of accelerating the development of green iron technology to meet the increasing demand inside and outside China. Fortescue's ambitious green iron project, situated at its Christmas Creek operations in Western Australia, is on track to produce over 1,500 metric tons of green iron annually, with initial production slated for 2025. The company has committed to transforming its entire portfolio into green iron by 2030.

The innovative process involves using green hydrogen in a reduction furnace to convert iron ore into sponge iron, which is subsequently processed in an electric smelting furnace to yield high-purity green iron. This initiative aligns with global trends in sustainable steel manufacturing, as noted by data from the IndexBox platform, which underscores the growing imperative for renewable energy in steel production.

Australia, known as the largest iron ore exporter globally, could potentially see a significant decline in revenue from this sector—up to 50%—if it doesn't embrace green iron production. This warning was highlighted in a think-tank report from the previous year. Fortescue CEO Dino Otranto previously stated the urgency for Australia to adopt green iron production to maintain its leading stance in the iron ore market.
