Fox Corp Makes a Strategic Move with Tubi for Super Bowl 59

Fox Corporation is paving a new path with its free, ad-supported streaming service, Tubi, by offering the biggest football game of the year, Super Bowl 59, on the platform. According to CNBC, this move marks a notable shift in strategy for Fox as it aims to leverage Tubi's growing popularity in the streaming marketplace.

Highlighting its commitment to expanding Tubi's reach, the platform will not only stream the main Fox broadcast of the Super Bowl but also the Spanish-language version from Fox Deportes. Additionally, Tubi-exclusive content will include a red carpet show for viewers interested in the spectacle beyond the gridiron.

Tubi's evolution has been impressive since its acquisition by Fox in 2020 for $440 million. Utilizing data from the IndexBox platform, it is evident that Tubi has become a significant revenue driver for Fox, outpacing the advertising income of Fox Entertainment in 2022. As of December, Nielsen reported that Tubi accounted for 1.7% of total TV viewing minutes, indicative of its rising influence.

With the introduction of Super Bowl streaming, Tubi is expected to further capture the attention of its predominantly millennial and Gen Z audience, most of whom do not subscribe to traditional cable TV. Tubi had 97 million monthly active viewers and over 10 billion streaming hours in 2024, reflecting its ongoing shift in viewer habits.

Fox's decision to showcase the Super Bowl on Tubi could also benefit the NFL. As the league looks to streaming as a key avenue to engage with fans, the inclusion of Tubi enriches the viewing experience and broadens the audience base.

This strategic venture by Fox illustrates its departure from typical subscription-based streaming services and underlines a focus on providing high-quality sports and news content, a decision that's helped it avoid significant financial losses suffered by its competitors.
