France's 2023 Import of Aluminium and Titanium Shrinks to $1.8 Billion
France Aluminium and Titanium Imports
In 2023, overseas purchases of aluminium and titanium decreased by -3.5% to 552K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 596K tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, aluminium and titanium imports declined to $1.8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +79.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $2B in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, the Netherlands (127K tons) constituted the largest aluminium and titanium supplier to France, with a 23% share of total imports. Moreover, aluminium and titanium imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (57K tons), twofold. Norway (54K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.7% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands stood at +20.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-0.2% per year) and Norway (-5.4% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($383M) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium and titanium to France, comprising 22% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($168M), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Norway, with a 9.4% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands totaled +21.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+1.7% per year) and Norway (-3.3% per year).
Imports by Type
In 2023, aluminum and alloys (545K tons) was the main type of aluminium and titanium supplied to France, with a 99% share of total imports. It was followed by titanium sponge, powders, ingots and slabs (7.3K tons), with a 1.3% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of aluminum and alloys imports totaled +1.4%.
In value terms, aluminum and alloys ($1.6B) constituted the largest type of aluminium and titanium supplied to France, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by titanium sponge, powders, ingots and slabs ($139M), with a 7.8% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the aluminium and titanium price amounted to $3,201 per ton (CIF, France), reducing by -9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $3,517 per ton in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($12,500 per ton), while the price for Luxembourg ($2,623 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iceland (+19.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
