Frances' Export of Cheese and Curd Sees a Slight Increase to $4.3B in 2023.

In 2023, after two years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of cheese and curd, when their volume decreased by -1.4% to 656K tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 749K tons. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cheese and curd exports expanded sharply to $4.3B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports by Country

Germany (116K tons), Spain (86K tons) and the Netherlands (85K tons) were the main destinations of cheese and curd exports from France, with a combined 44% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +9.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest markets for cheese and curd exported from France were Germany ($937M), Belgium ($564M) and Spain ($404M), with a combined 44% share of total exports. the UK, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +8.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (344K tons), unripened or uncured cheese (204K tons) and processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (55K tons) were the main products of cheese and curd exports from France, together accounting for 92% of total exports. Cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered and cheese, blue-veined (not grated, powdered or processed) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.1%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (with a CAGR of +6.2%), while the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed ($2.9B) remains the largest type of cheese and curd exported from France, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by unripened or uncured cheese ($648M), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered), with an 8.4% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed exports totaled +1.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: unripened or uncured cheese (-1.5% per year) and processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (-1.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the cheese and curd price stood at $6,558 per ton (FOB, France), increasing by 16% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($10,789 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($2,909 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
