France Cheese Export Price in April 2023
In April 2023, the cheese price stood at $6,613 per ton (FOB, France), surging by 4.1% against the previous month. Over the period from April 2022 to April 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 5.9% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in April 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($11,064 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($2,776 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

France Cheese Export Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was cheese, blue-veined (not grated, powdered or processed) ($11,501 per ton), while the average price for exports of fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd ($3,145 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (+2.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
France Cheese Exports
In April 2023, the amount of cheese exported from France fell significantly to 48K tons, which is down by -17.8% against March 2023. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 with an increase of 22% against the previous month.
In value terms, cheese exports contracted to $319M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when exports increased by 24% month-to-month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $373M, and then shrank in the following month.
France Cheese Exports by Type
Cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (25K tons), fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd (15K tons) and processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (4.3K tons) were the main products of cheese exports from France, together accounting for 92% of total exports. These products were followed by cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered and cheese, blue-veined (not grated, powdered or processed), which together accounted for a further 8.4%.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (with a CAGR of +0.7%), while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.
In value terms, cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed ($216M) remains the largest type of cheese exported from France, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd ($48M), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered), with an 8.5% share.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd (+0.8% per month) and processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (-0.1% per month).
France Cheese Exports by Country
Germany (7.9K tons), the Netherlands (6.7K tons) and Spain (6K tons) were the main destinations of cheese exports from France, together accounting for 43% of total exports.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +0.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest markets for cheese exported from France were Germany ($66M), Belgium ($43M) and Spain ($27M), with a combined 43% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Denmark and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Among the main countries of destination, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +2.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
