France Dairy Produce Exports
In 2023, shipments abroad of dairy produce decreased by -1.3% to 2.2M tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 4.4%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 2.9M tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dairy produce exports expanded significantly to $7.9B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 9.8%. The exports peaked in 2023 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country
Belgium (378K tons), Spain (256K tons) and Italy (251K tons) were the main destinations of dairy produce exports from France, with a combined 40% share of total exports. Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +7.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for dairy produce exported from France were Germany ($1.1B), Belgium ($1B) and Spain ($675M), with a combined 36% share of total exports. the UK, Italy, the Netherlands and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
China, with a CAGR of +12.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Cheese (657K tons), whole fresh milk (413K tons) and yoghurt and fermented milk (337K tons) were the main products of dairy produce exports from France, with a combined 63% share of total exports. Powdered milk, cream fresh, evaporated and condensed milk, skim milk, butter and dairy spreads and ghee lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by butter and dairy spreads (with a CAGR of +3.6%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, cheese ($4.3B) remains the largest type of dairy produce exported from France, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by powdered milk ($1.1B), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by yoghurt and fermented milk, with an 8.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of cheese exports was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: powdered milk (+0.8% per year) and yoghurt and fermented milk (-1.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the dairy produce price amounted to $3,539 per ton (FOB, France), picking up by 7.4% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, dairy produce export price increased by +28.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2023 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($8,325 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($2,274 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Portugal (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
