Mushroom Price in France Soars to $34.4 per kg

France Dried Mushroom Import Price in December 2022

In December 2022, the dried mushroom price amounted to $34,413 per ton (CIF, France), rising by 69% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $35,892 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to December 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2022, the country with the highest price was Chile ($189K per ton), while the price for Peru ($6,242 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

France Dried Mushroom Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was vegetables; mushrooms, other than the genus agaricus and truffles, whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried ($37,703 per ton), while the price for vegetables; wood ears (auricularia spp), whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried ($15,915 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by vegetables; wood ears (auricularia spp), whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried (+6.2%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

France Dried Mushroom Imports

In December 2022, purchases abroad of dried mushrooms and truffles decreased by -18.5% to 132 tons, falling for the third month in a row after three months of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when imports increased by 39% against the previous month.

In value terms, dried mushroom imports surged to $4.6M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. Overall, imports showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when imports increased by 64% m-o-m.

Moreover, vegetables; mushrooms, other than the genus agaricus and truffles, whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, vegetables; mushrooms of the genus agaricus, whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried (14 tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by vegetables; wood ears (auricularia spp), whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried (7.4 tons), with a 5.6% share.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of vegetables; mushrooms, other than the genus agaricus and truffles, whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried was relatively modest. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: vegetables; mushrooms of the genus agaricus, whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried (+8.9% per month) and vegetables; wood ears (auricularia spp), whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried (-14.1% per month).

In value terms, vegetables; mushrooms, other than the genus agaricus and truffles, whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried ($4.2M) constituted the largest type of dried mushroom supplied to France, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by vegetables; mushrooms of the genus agaricus, whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried ($271K), with a 5.9% share of total imports. It was followed by vegetables; wood ears (auricularia spp), whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder but not further prepared, dried, with a 2.6% share.

France Dried Mushroom Imports by Country

In December 2022, China (72 tons) constituted the largest supplier of dried mushroom to France, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, dried mushroom imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (17 tons), fourfold. Cyprus (9.2 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.9% share.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China stood at -2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Poland (+32.0% per month) and Cyprus (-52.7% per month).

In value terms, China ($2M) constituted the largest supplier of dried mushroom to France, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($497K), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Cyprus, with an 8.4% share.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at -1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Chile (+4.2% per month) and Cyprus (-48.5% per month).
