France Sees Increase in Fig Imports, Reaching $58 Million in 2023

In 2023, overseas purchases of figs decreased by -5.4% to 16K tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 21K tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fig imports expanded modestly to $58M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $71M in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.France Fig Imports By Country (Million USD)

Imports by Country

Turkey (7.4K tons), Spain (3.8K tons) and Italy (3.6K tons) were the main suppliers of fig imports to France, with a combined 94% share of total imports. Germany and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 3.5%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +63.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($34M) constituted the largest supplier of figs to France, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($12M), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+2.7% per year) and Italy (+1.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the fig price stood at $3,716 per ton (CIF, France), picking up by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 30%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $4,499 per ton. From 2019 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($6,965 per ton), while the price for Italy ($1,677 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
