France Frozen Whole Fish Imports
After two months of decline, overseas purchases of frozen whole fish increased by 9.9% to 4.6K tons in September 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when imports increased by 28% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 6.5K tons. From December 2022 to September 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, frozen whole fish imports expanded rapidly to $17M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 with an increase of 26% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of $23M. From December 2022 to September 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
In September 2023, the Netherlands (1.2K tons) constituted the largest supplier of frozen whole fish to France, with a 25% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen whole fish imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (407 tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (384 tons), with an 8.3% share.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from the Netherlands was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the UK (-2.1% per month) and Spain (-2.4% per month).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($4.3M) constituted the largest supplier of frozen whole fish to France, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($1.7M), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 4.9% share.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from the Netherlands amounted to +3.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Spain (+1.4% per month) and the UK (+0.9% per month).
Import Prices by Country
In September 2023, the frozen whole fish price amounted to $3,612 per ton (CIF, France), with a decrease of -3.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $4,474 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($17,960 per ton), while the price for Chile ($1,188 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+10.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
