In 2023, purchases abroad of ghee decreased by -8.5% to 29K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 29%. Imports peaked at 60K tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ghee imports shrank dramatically to $209M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when imports increased by 80% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $403M in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
the Netherlands (8.3K tons), Belgium (7.5K tons) and the UK (6K tons) were the main suppliers of ghee imports to France, together comprising 75% of total imports. Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +71.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest ghee suppliers to France were the Netherlands ($60M), Belgium ($59M) and the UK ($38M), together accounting for 75% of total imports. Germany, Ireland, Spain and New Zealand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
Among the main suppliers, Ireland, with a CAGR of +76.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the ghee price stood at $7,161 per ton (CIF, France), shrinking by -10.4% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated mild growth from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, ghee import price increased by +41.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 62%. The import price peaked at $7,989 per ton in 2022, and then shrank in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($8,391 per ton) and Belgium ($7,871 per ton), while the price for Ireland ($5,742 per ton) and New Zealand ($5,949 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
