France Lamb and Sheep Meat Imports

Lamb and sheep meat imports into France expanded modestly to 119K tons in 2023, surging by 3.4% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 33%. Imports peaked in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, lamb and sheep meat imports dropped modestly to $985M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 68%. Imports by Country

In 2023, the UK (76K tons) constituted the largest lamb and sheep meat supplier to France, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, lamb and sheep meat imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ireland (17K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Spain (9.7K tons), with an 8.1% share.

In value terms, the UK ($637M) constituted the largest supplier of lamb and sheep meat to France, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ireland ($142M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.5% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from the UK amounted to +8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ireland (+1.4% per year) and Spain (+4.9% per year).

Imports by Type

In 2023, fresh or chilled lamb carcasses and half-carcasses (77K tons) constituted the largest type of lamb and sheep meat supplied to France, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, fresh or chilled lamb carcasses and half-carcasses exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, fresh or chilled sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) (16K tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by fresh or chilled sheep (excluding lamb) carcasses and half-carcasses (9.7K tons), with an 8.2% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of fresh or chilled lamb carcasses and half-carcasses imports totaled +2.5%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: fresh or chilled sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) (-1.0% per year) and fresh or chilled sheep (excluding lamb) carcasses and half-carcasses (+9.6% per year).

In value terms, fresh or chilled lamb carcasses and half-carcasses ($635M) constituted the largest type of lamb and sheep meat supplied to France, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by fresh or chilled sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) ($145M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by fresh or chilled sheep (excluding lamb) carcasses and half-carcasses, with a 7.3% share.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the lamb and sheep meat price amounted to $8,286 per ton (CIF, France), shrinking by -6.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $8,850 per ton in 2022, and then dropped in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the Netherlands ($9,207 per ton) and the UK ($8,365 per ton), while the price for Spain ($7,674 per ton) and New Zealand ($7,950 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
