France's Mandarin and Clementine Price Shrinks Markedly to $1,639 per Ton

France Mandarin and Clementine Import Price in March 2023

In March 2023, the mandarin and clementine price stood at $1,639 per ton (CIF, France), shrinking by -6.1% against the previous month. Over the period from March 2022 to March 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 21% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,745 per ton in February 2023, and then declined in the following month.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Spain ($1,708 per ton) and Israel ($1,699 per ton), while the price for Morocco ($1,196 per ton) and Italy ($1,238 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

France Mandarin and Clementine Imports

In March 2023, supplies from abroad of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas decreased by -13.9% to 45K tons, falling for the second month in a row after six months of growth. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 with an increase of 391% month-to-month.

In value terms, mandarin and clementine imports dropped significantly to $74M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 when imports increased by 259% against the previous month.

Spain (22K tons), Israel (16K tons) and Morocco (5.2K tons) were the main suppliers of mandarin and clementine imports to France, with a combined 96% share of total imports. Italy and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 2.1%.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the biggest increases were in Italy (with a CAGR of +2.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Spain ($37M), Israel ($28M) and Morocco ($6.2M) appeared to be the largest mandarin and clementine suppliers to France, together comprising 96% of total imports. Italy and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 1.8%.
