France Sees a 4% Surge in Raspberry and Blackberry Imports, Reaching $191 Million in 2023

In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of raspberries and blackberries, when their volume decreased by -11% to 26K tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 103%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 29K tons. From 2020 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, raspberry and blackberry imports amounted to $191M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2023, Spain (10K tons) constituted the largest supplier of raspberry and blackberry to France, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, raspberry and blackberry imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (4.8K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (3.9K tons), with a 15% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain amounted to +8.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (+19.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+15.2% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($80M) constituted the largest supplier of raspberries and blackberries to France, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($34M), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 17% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain stood at +8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+20.4% per year) and Portugal (+19.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the raspberry and blackberry price amounted to $7,381 per ton (CIF, France), surging by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 80% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $10,101 per ton. From 2019 to 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($8,573 per ton), while the price for Poland ($4,970 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+8.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
