France's Wine Exports Plummet to $1.2B in July 2023

In July 2023, wine exports from France fell to 117M litres, waning by -11.3% against the previous month. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 20% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 132M litres in June 2023, and then fell in the following month.

In value terms, wine exports fell to $1.2B (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 when exports increased by 21% m-o-m. Exports by Country

Germany (16M litres), the UK (15M litres) and the United States (14M litres) were the main destinations of wine exports from France, together accounting for 38% of total exports.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the biggest increases were in the UK (with a CAGR of +0.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the United States ($226M), the UK ($173M) and Japan ($86M) were the largest markets for wine exported from France worldwide, together comprising 40% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Japan, with a CAGR of +1.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) (96M litres) was the largest type of wine exported from France, with a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) exceeded the volume of the second product type, sparkling wine (20M litres), fivefold.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: sparkling wine (-0.9% per month) and grape must (+17.8% per month).

In value terms, the most traded types of wine and grape must in France were wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) ($713M), sparkling wine ($486M) and grape must ($2M).

Among the main product categories, grape must, with a CAGR of +15.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In July 2023, the wine price amounted to $10.2 per litre (FOB, France), picking up by 3.3% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 11% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $10.3 per litre in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to July 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($18.5 per litre), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($4.4 per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
