This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, the total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, consumption decreased by -6.3% against 2021 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $26.9B. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the global market failed to regain momentum.

Consumption By Country

The country with the largest volume of fungicide and bactericide consumption was China (573K tons), comprising approx. 18% of total volume. Moreover, fungicide and bactericide consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, the United States (272K tons), twofold. France (251K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with an 8.1% share.

France, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Russia, South Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Tanzania and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +31.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size among the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, the highest levels of fungicide and bactericide per capita consumption was registered in France (3,696 kg per 1000 persons), followed by the UK (1,328 kg per 1000 persons), Tanzania (1,145 kg per 1000 persons) and Japan (1,074 kg per 1000 persons), while the world average per capita consumption of fungicide and bactericide was estimated at 391 kg per 1000 persons.

In 2023, production of fungicides, bactericides and seed treatments decreased by -0.4% to 3.1M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after nine years of growth. Overall, the total production indicated a prominent increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, production decreased by -5.0% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak volume of 3.3M tons. From 2022 to 2023, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fungicide and bactericide production amounted to $21.3B in 2023 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 7.1%. Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum level at $22.6B in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2023 were China (718K tons), India (456K tons) and France (319K tons), together comprising 48% of global production.

In value terms, France ($677M), Brazil ($625M) and Germany ($578M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, with a combined 18% share of global imports. China, Canada, Italy, Russia, the United States, Vietnam, Belgium, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Among the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +21.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2023, the average fungicide and bactericide import price amounted to $9,475 per ton, declining by -1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $11,594 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Export Prices By Country

The average fungicide and bactericide export price stood at $9,279 per ton in 2023, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when the average export price increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $10,494 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($16,615 per ton), while India ($3,579 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
