GAIL India Revives Plans to Invest in US LNG Amid Policy Shifts

In a strategic move following recent policy changes, GAIL India Ltd has announced its intentions to either acquire a stake in a U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility or finalize long-term supply agreements. This plan comes in response to the lifting of a ban on export permits for new LNG projects by the Trump administration, as reported by Yahoo Finance.

As India's leading gas distributor, GAIL is poised to capitalize on anticipated shifts in the LNG market. According to the company's chairman, Sandeep Kumar Gupta, global LNG prices are expected to stabilize post-2026, aided by additional supplies from new projects in the U.S. and other regions.

As of 2023, the United States recorded an export value of $33.4 billion for Petroleum gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons, highlighting its significant role in the global LNG landscape. Major export destinations included the Netherlands ($4.4 billion), France ($3.8 billion), and the United Kingdom ($3.5 billion).

India is the world's fourth-largest LNG importer, with aspirations to increase the natural gas share in its energy mix from the current 6.2% to 15% by 2030. The country's rising gas consumption, which surged by 12.5% to approximately 185 million standard cubic meters per day in fiscal year 2024, underscores the urgency of securing long-term LNG supplies.

Gupta emphasized that India's LNG consumption could rise significantly if the government introduces a more streamlined taxation framework under the goods and services tax regime. Presently, GAIL's portfolio includes contracts for purchasing 15.5 million tons per year of LNG from suppliers in the U.S., Qatar, Australia, and key traders like Vitol and Adnoc.

The outlook for U.S. LNG exports remains optimistic, with the country's capacity set to nearly double by the end of the decade. In 2023, the U.S. also imported LNG worth $963.1 million, primarily from Trinidad and Tobago ($513.7 million) and Nigeria ($449.3 million), illustrating its dynamic involvement in the global LNG market.
