Ganfeng Lithium Starts Production at Mali's Goulamina Mine

Ganfeng Lithium, China's largest lithium producer, has announced the start of production at the Goulamina spodumene project in Mali, Africa. The South China Morning Post reports that this venture is one of Africa's largest lithium mines and comes after Ganfeng acquired a 40% stake from Australia's Leo Lithium for $342.7 million in May.

This strategic acquisition is integral to China's lithium supply chain, particularly in the context of a 2023 mining code that allows the Malian government to secure up to a 35% stake—a 10% free carry and an optional purchase of an additional 25%. The Goulamina project is pivotal not only for Mali's economy but also for the broader West African region, given its potential output of 506,000 tons of lithium concentrate annually in its initial phase, with ambitions to double this in the second phase.

The long-term projections for the mine are equally optimistic, with estimates suggesting over 15.6 million tonnes of spodumene concentrate could be extracted over a 23-year period. This aligns with Mali's aim to position itself as a key player in the global lithium market, a move that is recognized by both Mali's transitional President Assimi Goita and the Chinese Ambassador to Mali, Chen Zhihong, as marking a significant step in the exploitation of natural resources.

Once the Malian government finalizes its 35% stake acquisition, Ganfeng Lithium will hold a 65% controlling interest in the mine, further solidifying its influence in the burgeoning lithium industry.
