General Motors Lays Off 50% of Cruise Employees After Ending Robotaxi Business

In a major shift within the autonomous vehicle industry, General Motors (GM) has announced the layoff of approximately half of the workforce at its Cruise robotaxi unit. This decision follows GM's declaration that it would cease funding Cruise, having invested over $10 billion since its acquisition in 2016. Cruise, which employed nearly 2,300 individuals at the end of last year, will see significant changes as it transitions to becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of GM. These layoffs impact primarily engineering and related roles, with 88% of remaining employees associated with these functions. Affected employees have been provided with 60 days' notice, along with severance packages that include full base pay for the remaining notice period and eight additional weeks' severance. Those with over three years of tenure will receive extra compensation.

This move comes amid an increasingly competitive market for robotaxis, coupled with the strategic alignment of GM's capital allocation and autonomy efforts. An independent investigation conducted earlier in January 2024 highlighted cultural and leadership challenges within Cruise, further influencing GM's decision. This scrutiny arose after a high-profile incident involving a Cruise robotaxi in San Francisco.
