Generative AI Set to Propel India's IT Sector Productivity by 45%

The integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into India's IT industry is anticipated to revolutionize productivity, potentially boosting it by 43% to 45% over the next five years, according to a report by EY India. This surge in efficiency is attributed to both the adoption of GenAI within IT companies and the transition of client projects from proof of concept to full-scale production.

Leading IT firms such as Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys are at the forefront, with 89% of clients experimenting with GenAI and 33% having already operationalized these projects. Abhinav Johri, a technology consulting partner at EY India, remarked, "Enterprises are moving beyond experimentation to putting AI into production at scale. The rapid transition from POC to enterprise-wide adoption reflects the industry's confidence in AI's potential."

The survey by EY India highlighted that software development roles are expected to benefit the most, with a remarkable 60% increase in productivity. This is followed by a 52% enhancement in BPO services and a 47% boost in IT consulting. These three sectors are projected to account for 50% to 60% of the overall productivity gains in tech services.

Beyond productivity, the adoption of AI is also empowering the IT sector to enhance customer service, reduce costs, and drive revenue growth, according to executives surveyed.
