German Steel Production Sees Moderate Growth Amid Economic Challenges

In 2024, Germany's steel industry witnessed a 5.2% increase in production, reaching an output of 37.23 million tons, according to a report by the German steel association WV Stahl. Despite the growth, production levels remained below 40 million tons for the third consecutive year, reflecting the nation's ongoing recessionary pressures. Economic challenges continued to loom over the industry, with the domestic market supply declining to a historic low of 27 million tons, down 7% year-on-year. Weak domestic demand further complicated matters, with the market having shrunk by about a third since 2017. The Association raised concerns over increasing cheap imports and rising electricity tariffs, which added an extra EUR300 million to the industry's costs in 2024.

Industry leaders, such as WV Stahl's CEO Kerstin Maria Rippel, emphasized the urgent need for political intervention to shield the sector from further setbacks. She urged the new German administration to reinstate EUR5.5 billion in grid tariff subsidies within the first 100 days of office and to adopt a proactive stance in European Union negotiations to combat unfair trade practices.
