Germany Aluminium and Titanium Imports
In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of aluminium and titanium, when their volume decreased by -11.7% to 2.3M tons. Overall, imports saw a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 2.7M tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aluminium and titanium imports plummeted to $6.6B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 64%. Imports peaked at $8.7B in 2022, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, the Netherlands (932K tons) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium and titanium to Germany, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, aluminium and titanium imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (234K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (156K tons), with a 6.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands stood at +6.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+3.7% per year) and France (+1.8% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($2.7B) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium and titanium to Germany, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($692M), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 6.8% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands totaled +8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+6.2% per year) and France (+3.9% per year).
Imports by Type
In 2023, aluminum and alloys (2.3M tons) was the main type of aluminium and titanium supplied to Germany, accounting for a 100% share of total imports. It was followed by titanium sponge, powders, ingots and slabs (2.9K tons), with a 0.1% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of aluminum and alloys imports amounted to -1.2%.
In value terms, aluminum and alloys ($6.5B) constituted the largest type of aluminium and titanium supplied to Germany, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by titanium sponge, powders, ingots and slabs ($49M), with a 0.7% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the aluminium and titanium price amounted to $2,920 per ton (CIF, Germany), waning by -14% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a notable increase from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, aluminium and titanium import price increased by +48.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $3,396 per ton in 2022, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($4,202 per ton), while the price for Russia ($2,644 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
