Germany Chemical Wood Pulp Imports

In 2023, imports of chemical wood pulp into Germany reduced to 3.2M tons, which is down by -13% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 6.8% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 4.4M tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chemical wood pulp imports fell sharply to $2.4B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 37%. Imports by Country

Finland (550K tons), Brazil (504K tons) and Sweden (497K tons) were the main suppliers of chemical wood pulp imports to Germany, together accounting for 48% of total imports. the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Spain and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +25.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest chemical wood pulp suppliers to Germany were Sweden ($393M), Finland ($382M) and Brazil ($347M), together comprising 47% of total imports. the Netherlands, Austria, the United States, Portugal and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Imports by Type

In 2023, bleached sulphate pulp (3.1M tons) was the main type of chemical wood pulp supplied to Germany, accounting for a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, unbleached sulphate pulp (131K tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by bleached sulphite pulp (44K tons), with a 1.4% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of bleached sulphate pulp imports stood at -2.6%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: unbleached sulphate pulp (-1.3% per year) and bleached sulphite pulp (-11.9% per year).

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp ($2.3B) constituted the largest type of chemical wood pulp supplied to Germany, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by unbleached sulphate pulp ($84M), with a 3.5% share of total imports. It was followed by bleached sulphite pulp, with a 2.4% share.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the chemical wood pulp price amounted to $745 per ton (CIF, Germany), with a decrease of -8.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $818 per ton in 2022, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,225 per ton), while the price for Spain ($584 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
