German Coffee Extract Prices Fall to Average of $12.3 per kg

Germany Coffee Extract Export Price in December 2022

In December 2022, the coffee extract price stood at $12.3 per kg (FOB, Germany), remaining constant against the previous month. Over the period from December 2021 to December 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2022 when the average export price increased by 11% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $12.5 per kg in November 2022, and then fell slightly in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Austria ($15.6 per kg), while the average price for exports to Romania ($7.1 per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Germany Coffee Extract Export Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In December 2022, the product with the highest price was extracts, essences and concentrates; of coffee, and preparations with a basis of these extracts, essences or concentrates or with a basis of coffee ($14.3 per kg), while the average price for exports of coffee substitutes containing coffee ($0.9 per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: coffee substitutes (+6.8%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Germany Coffee Extract Exports

In December 2022, overseas shipments of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by -2.5% to 6.3K tons, falling for the second consecutive month after two months of growth. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2022 with an increase of 28% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 7.8K tons. From February 2022 to December 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coffee extract exports declined to $78M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7% over the period from December 2021 to December 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2022 when exports increased by 41% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 92K tons in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to December 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany Coffee Extract Exports by Type

Extracts, essences and concentrates; of coffee, and preparations with a basis of these extracts, essences or concentrates or with a basis of coffee (4.7K tons) was the largest type of coffee extract exported from Germany, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, extracts, essences and concentrates; of coffee, and preparations with a basis of these extracts, essences or concentrates or with a basis of coffee exceeded the volume of the second product type, preparations with a basis of extracts, essences or concentrates or with a basis of coffee (1.4K tons), threefold.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of extracts, essences and concentrates; of coffee, and preparations with a basis of these extracts, essences or concentrates or with a basis of coffee was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: preparations with a basis of extracts, essences or concentrates or with a basis of coffee (+0.1% per month) and coffee substitutes containing coffee (+0.7% per month).

In value terms, extracts, essences and concentrates; of coffee, and preparations with a basis of these extracts, essences or concentrates or with a basis of coffee ($67M) remains the largest type of coffee extract exported from Germany, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by preparations with a basis of extracts, essences or concentrates or with a basis of coffee ($11M), with a 14% share of total exports.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of extracts, essences and concentrates; of coffee, and preparations with a basis of these extracts, essences or concentrates or with a basis of coffee totaled +3.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: preparations with a basis of extracts, essences or concentrates or with a basis of coffee (+1.0% per month) and coffee substitutes containing coffee (+7.5% per month).

Germany Coffee Extract Exports by Country

The UK (1K tons), Poland (794 tons) and France (758 tons) were the main destinations of coffee extract exports from Germany, with a combined 41% share of total exports. the Netherlands, Russia, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Romania, Ukraine, the United States, South Africa, Austria and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +10.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for coffee extract exported from Germany were the UK ($14M), Poland ($9.9M) and France ($6.7M), together comprising 40% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Russia, Belgium, the Czech Republic, South Africa, the United States, Austria, Ukraine, Australia and Romania, which together accounted for a further 37%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Belgium, with a CAGR of +13.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
