Germany Dairy Produce Exports

In 2023, overseas shipments of dairy produce increased by 11% to 4.9M tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at 5.5M tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dairy produce exports amounted to $12.4B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20%. Exports by Country

the Netherlands (1.2M tons), Italy (858K tons) and Belgium (363K tons) were the main destinations of dairy produce exports from Germany, with a combined 49% share of total exports. Austria, France, Poland, Spain and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +3.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for dairy produce exported from Germany were the Netherlands ($1.9B), Italy ($1.8B) and Belgium ($913M), with a combined 38% share of total exports. France, Austria, Spain, Poland and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +5.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Whole fresh milk (1.6M tons), cheese (1.4M tons) and yoghurt and fermented milk (593K tons) were the main products of dairy produce exports from Germany, with a combined 73% share of total exports. Powdered milk, evaporated and condensed milk, cream fresh, skim milk, butter and dairy spreads and ghee lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by cream fresh (with a CAGR of +2.8%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, cheese ($6.7B) remains the largest type of dairy produce exported from Germany, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by powdered milk ($1.3B), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by yoghurt and fermented milk, with a 9.2% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of cheese exports amounted to +2.7%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: powdered milk (-0.6% per year) and yoghurt and fermented milk (+1.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the dairy produce price stood at $2,524 per ton (FOB, Germany), shrinking by -5.4% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight increase from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, dairy produce export price increased by +80.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $2,670 per ton in 2022, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($3,995 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($1,224 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
