Decline in German Export of Drawing Ink Pens to $13M in September 2023

Germany Drawing Ink Pen Exports

In September 2023, after three months of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of indian ink drawing pens, fountain pens and stylograph pens, when their volume increased by 2.1% to 492K units. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when exports increased by 44% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 667K units in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, drawing ink pen exports fell to $13M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 43% month-to-month. Exports by Country

China (148K units) was the main destination for drawing ink pen exports from Germany, accounting for a 30% share of total exports. Moreover, drawing ink pen exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (31K units), fivefold. Austria (30K units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.2% share.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to China amounted to +1.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Poland (-1.7% per month) and Austria (-2.6% per month).

In value terms, the largest markets for drawing ink pen exported from Germany were China ($2.3M), the United States ($1.3M) and Hong Kong ($1.2M), with a combined 37% share of total exports.

Hong Kong, with a CAGR of +1.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In September 2023, the drawing ink pen price stood at $26.4 per unit (FOB, Germany), shrinking by -4.8% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 26% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $27.8 per unit in August 2023, and then reduced slightly in the following month.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($106 per unit), while the average price for exports to Romania ($8.3 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
