Germany's Imports of Electric Water Heaters Experience Minor Decline to $23M in September 2023

Germany Electric Water Heater Imports

In September 2023, supplies from abroad of electric water heaters and immersion heaters increased by 1.5% to 120K units, rising for the second month in a row after two months of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 when imports increased by 23% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 150K units in October 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to September 2023.

In value terms, electric water heater imports reduced to $23M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 when imports increased by 25% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $28M. Imports by Country

In September 2023, China (47K units) constituted the largest supplier of electric water heater to Germany, with a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, electric water heater imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (11K units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Portugal (8.5K units), with a 7.1% share.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Turkey (-5.2% per month) and Portugal (+0.1% per month).

In value terms, China ($6.6M) constituted the largest supplier of electric water heater to Germany, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Portugal ($2.1M), with a 9.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with an 8.4% share.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Portugal (+2.9% per month) and Poland (-7.2% per month).

Import Prices by Country

In September 2023, the electric water heater price amounted to $191 per unit (CIF, Germany), shrinking by -2.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 17% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $215 per unit in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($392 per unit), while the price for Serbia ($112 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
