Germany Frozen Fruit Imports

In 2023, the amount of frozen fruits imported into Germany declined to 310K tons, shrinking by -11.8% against the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 12%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 408K tons. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen fruit imports fell rapidly to $634M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $809M. Imports by Country

Poland (82K tons), Serbia (46K tons) and Egypt (43K tons) were the main suppliers of frozen fruit imports to Germany, together accounting for 55% of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($155M), Serbia ($126M) and the Netherlands ($82M) constituted the largest frozen fruit suppliers to Germany, with a combined 57% share of total imports. Egypt, Belgium, Austria, Canada and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +15.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

Frozen fruits and nuts (excluding strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black, white or red currants, and gooseberries) (143K tons), frozen raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black-, white- or red currants and gooseberries (84K tons) and frozen strawberries (82K tons) were the main products of frozen fruit imports to Germany.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by frozen strawberries (with a CAGR of -0.4%), while imports for the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, frozen fruits and nuts (excluding strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black, white or red currants, and gooseberries) ($269M), frozen raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, black-, white- or red currants and gooseberries ($244M) and frozen strawberries ($121M) appeared to be the most imported types of frozen fruits in Germany.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the frozen fruit price stood at $2,047 per ton (CIF, Germany), waning by -9.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 19%. The import price peaked at $2,266 per ton in 2022, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($2,726 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($1,119 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
