Export of Gear Cutting Machines in Germany Skyrockets to $610M by 2023

Germany Gear Cutting Machine Exports

In 2023, overseas shipments of gear cutting, gear grinding or gear finishing machines increased by 5.4% to 880 units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 901 units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gear cutting machine exports skyrocketed to $610M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Exports by Country

China (424 units) was the main destination for gear cutting machine exports from Germany, accounting for a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, gear cutting machine exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (104 units), fourfold. Turkey (88 units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to China amounted to +10.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+8.7% per year) and Turkey (+2.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($373M) remains the key foreign market for gear cutting, gear grinding or gear finishing machines exports from Germany, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($38M), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China totaled +9.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+7.8% per year) and the United States (-6.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the gear cutting machine price amounted to $689,725 per unit (FOB, Germany), with an increase of 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $736,211 per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($985,051 per unit), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($160,020 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
