Germany Polystyrene Exports
In 2023, overseas shipments of polystyrene decreased by -26.9% to 346K tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 554K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, polystyrene exports contracted rapidly to $675M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 82%. The exports peaked at $1.2B in 2022, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country
Poland (67K tons), Italy (53K tons) and the Netherlands (37K tons) were the main destinations of polystyrene exports from Germany, together accounting for 46% of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($129M), Italy ($106M) and France ($74M) were the largest markets for polystyrene exported from Germany worldwide, with a combined 46% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Italy, with a CAGR of +5.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Exports by Type
Expansible polystyrene in primary forms (263K tons) was the largest type of polystyrene exported from Germany, with a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, expansible polystyrene in primary forms exceeded the volume of the second product type, polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) (83K tons), threefold.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of expansible polystyrene in primary forms exports stood at -1.8%.
In value terms, expansible polystyrene in primary forms ($539M) remains the largest type of polystyrene exported from Germany, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) ($136M), with a 20% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of expansible polystyrene in primary forms exports amounted to -2.5%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the polystyrene price stood at $1,948 per ton (FOB, Germany), shrinking by -21.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 64%. The export price peaked at $2,468 per ton in 2022, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($2,401 per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($1,399 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ireland (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
