Germany Sees 4% Increase in Soft Drink Exports, Reaching $240M in August 2023

Germany Soft Drink Exports

In August 2023, shipments abroad of soft drinks increased by 1.3% to 191M litres for the first time since May 2023, thus ending a two-month declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when exports increased by 28% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 226M litres in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, soft drink exports reached $240M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2023. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1% over the period from August 2022 to August 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when exports increased by 23% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 264M litres in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.Germany Soft Drink Exports By Country (Million USD)

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (42M litres), the UK (22M litres) and France (19M litres) were the main destinations of soft drink exports from Germany, together accounting for 44% of total exports.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +2.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest markets for soft drink exported from Germany were the Netherlands ($36M), the UK ($29M) and France ($22M), with a combined 36% share of total exports.

the UK, with a CAGR of +3.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Sugary soft drinks (110M litres) and non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk (81M litres) were the main products of soft drink exports from Germany.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk (with a CAGR of -0.6%).

In value terms, non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk ($150M) and sugary soft drinks ($90M) constituted the most exported types of soft drinks from Germany worldwide.

Non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk, with a CAGR of +1.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In August 2023, the soft drink price stood at $1.3 per litre (FOB, Germany), picking up by 2.3% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 17% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $1.3 per litre in March 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2023.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Spain ($2.0 per litre), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($715 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
