Germany's DAX Index Ends Spectacular Two-Year Run

In a remarkable performance, Germany's DAX Index has ended its largest two-year rally in over a decade, significantly outperforming its European counterparts. According to a Bloomberg report, the index closed the year with a 19% increase, contributing to a total rise of 43% since January 2023.

This outstanding growth, despite trailing behind the US's S&P 500, has left Germany's DAX far ahead of regional peers such as the UK's FTSE 100 and France's CAC 40. The expectations for a robust global economy and a reviving Chinese market have been favorable for German stocks, amid local economic challenges.

SAP SE emerged as a major contributor to 2024's gains, driven by investor interest in technology stocks, accounting for nearly one-third of the DAX's rally. Siemens Energy AG saw a surge in excess of 300%, enhancing the index's performance, while increased defense spending pushed Rheinmetall AG shares to more than double their value.

These gains helped mitigate challenges in Germany's core sectors. Automotive giants like Volkswagen AG, Porsche AG, and BMW AG saw losses surpassing 20% due to waning demand and competition from Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturers. Bayer AG, facing a 43% decline, emerged as the biggest loser, as it contended with turnaround challenges and legal disputes.

Looking ahead, strategists predict more restrained growth in the upcoming year, as revealed in a Bloomberg survey. The national election in February is anticipated to be a pivotal event, potentially unlocking increased fiscal spending for the weakening domestic economy.
